On 9 October 2025, the Strategic Research Council (SRC) operating under the Academy of Finland granted a total of 29 million euros to research supporting economic growth and the future of work. The ten funded consortia, or project entities, conduct long-term research aimed at finding solutions to key societal challenges.

One of the projects is SpacEconomy, which strengthens Finland’s position in the rapidly growing global space economy. It addresses the fragmentation of Finland’s space ecosystem by promoting innovation, sustainability, and cross-sector collaboration.

The project brings together experts from science, industry, business, and the public sector to enhance economic growth, productivity, and societal well-being. SpacEconomy focuses on AI-based satellite data applications, sustainable business models, international cooperation, and responsible regulation. Strengthening education and citizen engagement ensures future expertise and trust.

Through strategic collaboration and practical solutions, SpacEconomy supports Finland’s competitiveness, addresses challenges related to climate change and regional inequality, and promotes sustainable growth and resilience in the digital and green transition.

The project involves Aalto University, University of Helsinki, Finnish Meteorological Institute, National Land Survey of Finland, Tampere University, University of Turku, University of Vaasa, and Kupla Productions Oy. The project is led by Heidi Kuusniemi from Tampere University.

This website will also gradually come to life starting in early October.
